Manchester United won by the narrowest of margins against Burnley today at Turf Moor, after an intense match in which the opposition proved more difficult to deal with than expected. The story of the meeting…

Entering the pitch at Turf Moor, the Red Devils know very well that they will have to give everything today to finally put an end to their current bad patch and thus obtain their first away victory of the season, after a umpteenth frustrating defeat suffered on Wednesday against Bayern at the Allianz Arena.

Burnley-United : La compo mancunienne

From the start of the match, United put their foot on the leather.

In the 7th minute of play, United created their first chance of the game. Marcus Rashford serves Bruno Fernandes perfectly behind the Clarets rearguard but the Mancunian captain’s first-intention cross shot is firmly deflected by Trafford. Damage !

Three minutes later, it was Burnley’s turn to get their first chance of the game. After a long one-two between Roberts and Gudmundsson, the first sent a licked cross to Amdouni, well placed in the Reds area. Fortunately, the Swiss striker saw his header authoritatively deflected for a corner by Onana. Phew!

In the 17th, Burnley insisted. Served subtly deep in the zone of truth, Amdouni (him again) presents himself in a duel against Onana and decides to cross his strike. Fortunately for Erik ten Hag’s men, his attempt hit Onana’s left post before the Mancunian defense finally repelled the danger.

In the 25th minute, United thought they would open the scoring. On a corner cleverly taken by Reguilon, Jonny Evans jumps higher than everyone and sprays a lethal header from close range into the back of the Trafford net. But, after reviewing the video, the referee ultimately decides to cancel the achievement of the Northern Irish international for a passive offside position by Hojlund which seems to visibly bother the Burnley goalkeeper in this action .

Following this disallowed goal, Erik ten Hag’s men gradually lost control of the game in this meeting and unfortunately let Burnley settle in their half too easily.

In the 43rd minute, Onana had to intervene in two stages to capture the good long-range and powerful shot from the Englishman Aaron Ramsey.

But, in the 45th minute, just before the break, after a majestic through ball from Jonny Evans, Bruno Fernandes finally launched the debates in this confrontation, against the run of play, with an impeccable cross volley, triggered between two Burnlian defenders, who finishes his race in a straight line in the small right inside net of Trafford. Splendid and unstoppable! 0-1 pour United.

For his 200th with United, Jonny Evans first thought he had opened the scoring, before seeing his goal ultimately disallowed for a passive offside position, then delivered a sublime assist for Bruno Fernandes.

Returning from the locker room, Burnley continued to dictate the pace of the match, without being dangerous offensively.

In the 63rd minute, United finally reacted and McTominay tried a shot from distance. However, the Scottish international crushed his shot a little too much to worry Trafford.

After the hour mark, the Red Devils put their paws back on the ball but continued to struggle in the last move.

In the 75th minute of play, Al-Dakhil opened the game nicely towards Roberts in depth. But that was without counting on the excellent outing of André Onana and the mischievous defense of Jonny Evans!

In the 79th minute, Erik ten Hag was forced to make a change. Reguilon, visibly injured in the thigh, gives way to Raphaël Varane, returning from injury.

Ten minutes later, the Dutch tactician made another change. Sofyan Amrabat comes into play for his first in the Mancunian tunic in place of Jonny Evans who really gave us a great performance this evening.

At the very last second of the game, Onana firmly captured Benson’s long-range attempt and Manchester United was declared the winner of this match.

The Red Devils thus record their first away victory of the season. A good omen before a series of four consecutive home matches!

Next match: Tuesday September 26, at 9 p.m., at Old Trafford, against Crystal Palace, in the third round of the Carabao Cup of which United are the current title holders.
