ATHENS, 17 August. /TASS/. English football club “Manchester City” in the penalty shootout beat the Spanish “Seville” in the match for the UEFA Super Cup. The meeting took place at the Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus, which is located a few kilometers from Athens.

The main time of the meeting ended with the score 1:1. Cole Palmer scored for Manchester City (63rd minute). Sevilla scored Youssef En-Nesiri (25). In the penalty shootout, the English team won with a score of 5:4, the only 11-meter penalty was not converted by Sevilla midfielder Nemanja Gudel. For the first time in the UEFA Super Cup, a new format was used: following the end of regular time in a draw, the teams did not play two extra halves of 15 minutes, but immediately took penalties.
The match began with a moment of silence in memory of a Greek AEK fan who died following a clash between fans of the Greek club and Dinamo Zagreb on 8 August.
Manchester City won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time, in the 2022/23 season the English team won the Champions League for the first time. Sevilla won the Europa League for the seventh time last season. On August 6, Manchester City lost to London’s Arsenal in the FA Super Cup match on penalties, regular time ended 1-1, with Palmer scoring as part of Manchester City. Manchester City head coach Josep Guardiola won the trophy for the fourth time, having previously led Spain’s Barcelona (2009, 2011) and Germany’s Bayern Munich (2013) to victories in the tournament.
The match for the UEFA Super Cup in 2023 was to be held in Kazan at the Ak Bars Arena. In January, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced the postponement of the match in Greece due to the situation in Ukraine.
The UEFA Super Cup was played for the 48th time, from 1998 to 2012 the winner of the trophy was determined in Monaco, then UEFA decided to change the venue of the match. In 2008, Zenit St. Petersburg won the UEFA Super Cup following beating the English Manchester United (2:0). In 2005, CSKA Moscow fought for him, but lost to the English Liverpool (1:3).
