“Manchester City has completed the signing of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea on a four-year contract,” the club said in a statement.
He added, “The 29-year-old player played 221 matches in five seasons with Chelsea and won the Champions League, European League (Europa League), Club World Cup and European Super Cup, in addition to being chosen as the club’s player of the year for the 2019-2020 season.”
English newspapers revealed that the value of the deal amounted to regarding 32 million dollars.
For his part, Kovacic said, “It’s a great step for me and I can’t wait to get started with City.”
“Anyone who has seen this team under Pep (Guardiola) knows how good he is. For me, he is the best in the world.”
“The titles they won are clear for everyone to see, but they are also the best football team,” added the Croatian, who began his career with Dinamo Zagreb before moving to Italian Inter and Spanish Real Madrid and played 95 international matches.
The contract with Kovacic comes to compensate for the absence of German Ilkay Gundogan, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer deal a few days ago, with the expiration of his contract with City.
On the other hand, the Spanish director of football, Txiki Begiristain, praised the qualities of the newcomer, “He is a multi-talented player… He has a lot of experience in big clubs and he understands the English Premier League.”
And he added, “It was a very simple decision to bring him to City because he has the tactical and technical qualities that we look for in a midfielder.”
