Managing Summer Crowds at Genève Aéroport: Be Prepared and Arrive Early

2023-06-19 17:03:46

For Genève Aéroport, the coming summer will resemble, in terms of activities, the summers before the Covid-19 pandemic. Just over 3 million passengers will pass through Geneva in July and August. “We have the means and the people to absorb this flow”, indicates its managing director André Schneider.

According to forecasts, passenger traffic over the next two months will reach 92 to 93% of the 2019 level. In terms of number of flights, Genève Aéroport forecasts 94 to 96% of the summer 2019 volume.

All the actors of the platform, airlines and ground handling companies, have mobilized to respond to this renewed activity.

Asked in Forum, André Schneider, general manager of Geneva airport, said he had “the means and the people to absorb” the 3 million passengers planned. “We will also try to create more space, not to have more passengers but to give more space per passenger. We must not forget that the terminal was built in 1968 for 5 million passengers”.

A total of 123 destinations are offered from Geneva. The connections are operated by 44 airlines. The airport offers twelve long-haul destinations with mostly daily frequencies, operated by Air China, Ethiopian Airlines and Delta. The two airlines offering the most destinations from Geneva are easyJet and Swiss.

Preparatory work

For the past few weeks, notes Genève Aéroport, preparatory work has been carried out with the companies present on the site. This was to ensure that the teams were reinforced and to ensure that everyone was well coordinated in anticipation of the increase in traffic.

The airport, however, stressed that not everything is up to them. And the challenges are numerous: there is the congestion of the airspace, the question of the workforce which has not yet returned to normal, the risks of strikes, actions by climate activists, but also the vagaries meteorological conditions such as the storms that have occurred in recent days. The war in Ukraine also has an impact on air routes.

The airport does not particularly notice any change in travel habits. Far from observing a disenchantment with air travel, he affirms on the contrary that the rate of occupancy of the aircraft has rarely been so high.

Genève Aéroport therefore reminds travelers of the importance of allowing sufficient time for check-in and security clearance. It is best to arrive at least two hours before your flight departs.
