Managing Overtourism in Switzerland: Balancing Popular Destinations with Hidden Gems

2023-07-28 04:33:43

What regarding Switzerland? Our country is not immune to the phenomenon of overtourism. We remember the explosion in attendance at Val Verzasca, in Ticino, known for its turquoise waters, the ideal setting for beautiful photos on social networks.

More recently, it was the Bernese village of Iseltwald, on the shores of Lake Brienz, which hit the headlines, taken by storm by fans of a South Korean series “Crash Landing on you”.

It is in particular a pontoon (also very photogenic) which is the center of attention. To manage crowds, a turnstile now bars access to the platform. To pass, you have to pay five francs.

Attendance peaks

Questioned on July 13 in the program Forum, Véronique Kanel, the spokeswoman for Switzerland Tourism, however, warns once morest comparing the situation in Switzerland with those of other countries.

“In Switzerland, we have a problem that I would call “one-off overtourism”, or peaks in attendance, which affect tourist hotspots, for example Lucerne, but also cases like Iseltwald, where overtourism has been created by a television show and through social networks. It’s an effect that we don’t know if it will be lasting,” she analyzes. She also cites the case of Val Verzasca in Ticino.

Encourage thinking outside the box

What measures to take? “There is no universal solution applicable everywhere”, points out Véronique Kanel. She indicates that Switzerland Tourism follows the strategy of the French government: to act on marketing to travellers. It’s regarding “showing them that it’s not just the high tourist spots that are interesting, but that they should also be able to visit other places in the country, less touristy perhaps, but also very attractive”.

The objective is also to “allow a better distribution of tourist flows, both temporally – that is to say in different seasons – and geographically”.
