Dr. Artner, how relevant is osteoarthritis and what can you do regarding it?
dr Juraj Artner: The population is getting older and the topic of arthrosis is becoming increasingly important, since the number of wear and tear diseases increases with age. In general, the cartilage tissue is nourished by the movement of the joint. And this diet deteriorates with age. But everyone can do something regarding it: light to moderate exercise is best, if possible daily. We are talking regarding sports such as walking, cycling or swimming, in which the whole body is trained without overloading the joints. So-called contact sports such as handball or sports with abrupt turning movements are not suitable at all. Tennis in particular is poison for joint problems such as arthrosis.
What do you think of dietary supplements?
dr Artner: Dietary supplements can only make a certain contribution at the beginning of arthrosis. At an advanced stage they don’t make any sense, if I’m honest.
What contribution can physiotherapy make?
dr Artner: The movement therapy is the most important part of the treatment. There are basically two problems with arthrosis. On the one hand, signs of wear and tear lead to great pain. On the other hand, there are restricted movements in the affected joints. Proper exercise therapy – preferably under the guidance of a physical therapist – is the best way to address both issues.
In the Berchtesgaden valley basin, people benefit from the specialist clinic.
dr Artner: Due to the orthopedic orientation of our specialist clinic, we have all the possibilities on site to help the people of Berchtesgaden with degenerative diseases and thus also to significantly relieve the pain. We can help with physiotherapy as well as with physical measures and with medication as part of conservative therapy. We also have experts for operational measures.
Are there forward-looking developments?
dr Artner: Drugs are currently being researched to stop the process. However, the topic is so complex that the development will certainly take some time. To date, the two ways – conservative and operative – have proven themselves well. In order to treat pain effectively, it is important not only to know the anatomy, pharmacology and neurobiochemistry of the pain, but also to take a holistic view of the person being treated. You have to understand him, pick him up at his painful low point, guide him, accompany him and show him a way back into his life. Our declared goal here at the Berchtesgaden Specialist Clinic is to achieve a noticeable improvement in the quality of life for all patients by reducing their pain.
