The popular restaurant Chez Soje in Jette is closing the doors of its summer bar earlier than planned. Lack of attendance? No way. The terrace was regularly crowded. Some “undesirable” visitors even got into the habit of settling there outside opening hours. A presence marked in particular by the abandonment of waste and other nuisances. “We’ve had enough,” says the manager to our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws.
“In 2020, we launched the Chez Soje guinguette, an extension of our existing terrace. We thought it would be a good way to revitalize the restaurant following the health crisis”, begins the manager Michel Dubois.
“At the end of each service, we took the trouble to clean the place, especially for the inhabitants of the neighborhood. But the next morning we once more had to pick up beer cans, liquor bottles and other trash that people left behind when the restaurant was already closed. These were people who sat on the chairs on the terrace following hours to drink and chat”.
Restaurant staff and residents have filed several complaints with the police. Calls that were useless, the situation even got worse. “In the beginning, the staff took care of the cleaning and we helped with the management. We gave people garbage bags so they wouldn’t throw their rubbish on the floor. We tried to talk to them, but most didn’t speak French/Dutch or were drunk.
“We’ve had enough”
Even following attaching padlocks to the chairs on the terrace, the nuisance persisted. “After 3 years in the guinguette, we’ve had enough…”, sighs Michel. “We can no longer keep the neighborhood clean with the staff present. It’s a shame, because we have invested body and soul in this project.
