Last Monday, several residents of Neudorf has Strasbourg complained on Facebook regarding an abnormally high presence of mosquitoes This year.
Is it a feeling or a reality? We asked the Syndicat de Lutte contre les Moustiques du Bas-Rhin (SLM 67), which is the public mosquito control operator in the department.
A natural increase in the number of mosquitoes
According to the latter, yes, there is a natural growth in the number of mosquitoes, year following year. “Once the mosquitoes settle somewhere, their numbers grow from year to year, as well as their geographical location expands,” explains Christelle Bender, the scientific and technical manager of the SLM 67.
However, ” the situation is not homogeneous everywhere : there are districts of Strasbourg where it stings more than others, and in particular districts where it stings enormously”. And, indeed, Neudorf is one of the particularly exposed districts.
The weather didn’t help
THE recent rains also played.
“When there is water in containers, it will attract the female, which will lay her eggs just above the surface of the water, on the edges. For there to be hatching, the egg must be submerged. So, following a rain for example, the water level will rise, the eggs will be under water and the hatching will take place”, explains the specialist.
The mosquito: above all a private matter
Mrs Bender encourages everyone to fight once morest his presence“most of the breeding sites are located on the private domain”.

It is therefore important to take care to “regularly empty the water containers”, “hermetically close the rainwater collectors”, or even “regularly rub the inside of the containers with a hard-bristle brush to loosen the eggs”.
