Back pain affects an increasing number of individuals in the 21st century. There are many explanations for this, but lack of activity and sitting for long hours at a desk are a major cause. The first instinct is to consult a doctor to receive medication to relieve the pain. However, the physiotherapist can perfectly try to rebalance your spine using the McKenzie method, without the need for surgery. This technique is also recognized by the High Authority of Health in France.

Presentation of the McKenzie method

It was Robin McKenzie, a New Zealand physiotherapist who invented this technique in the late 1950s. exercises mckenzie aim to reduce, and why not completely eliminate, musculoskeletal pain, through repetitive movements to be carried out by the patient himself. In other words, the masseur-physiotherapist is required to adopt a new approach. This involves not only carrying out a physical examination on the patient, but also directing questions regarding the mechanical behavior of the symptoms that the latter experiences.

We can say that the McKenzie method brings a plus to the field of physiotherapy insofar as it introduces the notion of self-treatment. The main objective of the McKenzie technique is therefore to ensure that the patient becomes an actor in his own healing. With this in mind, the specialist will have him perform a series of movements that are relatively easy to do and which he can reproduce at home in the event of an attack. This will help rebalance your spine. And this, without resorting to medication or surgery. This is why the McKenzie method is also called “Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy” (MDT).

Before teaching the patient how to relieve their pain using the McKenzie method, the physiotherapist first attempts to identify the nature of this pain, whether it is lumbar, cervical, back, etc. With this in mind, he carries out an interrogation before making him do a series of exercises. He will then record the painful parts that the patient describes during the exercises. This allows the physiotherapist to develop other exercises to relieve the pain in the areas previously described.

It is then up to the patient to reproduce these McKenzie method exercises at home for several minutes. The goal of these repetitive exercises is to rebalance the movement of the patient. In this way, his body gradually returns to its original position and manages pain optimally, without resorting to surgery or medication.

Who can use this technique?

Quite officially, self-management of symptoms as well as the resumption of daily activities and the adapted and split resumption of physical activities are recommended by the High Authority of Health in cases of acute lower back pain lasting less than 7 days. If it is chronic low back pain, that is to say one which has lasted for more than one trimester, or which might become so, she recommends that patients contact a physiotherapist in order to relieve, or even make the pain disappear.

However, the McKenzie method is also effective for cases of peripheral joint pain, mechanical spinal pain and sciatica. If you are an athlete, do not hesitate to consult a physiotherapist who practices the McKenzie method if you are injured or victim of a fall. It is true that this technique offers many benefits, namely:

  • rebalancing the spine to relieve pain;
  • the reduction of consultations with a physiotherapist since the patient acquires a certain autonomy;
  • reducing the use of medications, particularly painkillers;
  • less frequent use of medical imaging and surgery.

To remember :

It is entirely possible to carry out work sessions via teleconsultation with the physiotherapist. This way, the latter will be able to check if the movements are correctly executed.
