NEW YORK — A hammer-wielding man allegedly attacked an MTA employee on a Manhattan subway platform overnight, then ran off and tried to hide under a parked train before police shut off the power. and detained him, according to authorities.
There was no immediate speculation regarding a possible motive for the attack, which occurred just before 2 a.m. Tuesday on the L line platform at 14th Street and Eighth Avenue.
Cops say it appears the suspect somehow entered an MTA workroom and removed the hammer from a tool bag. He then used it on the unsuspecting 51-year-old worker, police added.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to be fine.
The alleged attacker was taken into custody and taken to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. There was no immediate word on possible charges early Tuesday.
