On their “Monkey Moments” (Fosbury Music), the Viennese duo MAN vs. MONKEY impressively shows how diverse catchy pop music can actually sound.
Originally from Daniel Logar aka Dan the Man and Funky Monkey, the two heads of Man vs. Monkey, from the pop and alternative rock sector, but together they turn to much more electronic and danceable sounds and beats, although one shouldn’t just reduce their sound to exuberant dance music, because their songs are simply too musically and stylistically diverse for that . If you listen to the new debut album by the two “Monkey Moments”, you get a bit of everything. At one point it leans a bit towards funk (“Let it ride”), at another it mixes rock and hip hop (“1-2-3”), then once more it suddenly becomes danceable and melancholic at the same time (“When I´ m 22″). This changing key basically runs through the entire album. And in a positive sense.
The nice thing regarding the whole story is that the songs are from Man vs. Monkey They all tell very different stories, they always go in a different direction and always have a different accent. But what they all have in common is that they create a lot of atmosphere and stick in your ear canals from the first second with their very catchy melodies. You can just tell that they both know exactly how to make songs work. The fact that… Dan the Man and Funky Monkey We looked for a different voice for every single song. These include Chris Cron (lead singer of the 2010 chart-toppers Melee’s), the LA native Marie Font and the Austrian singer Emma-Mo represented with a contribution.
In summary, Man vs. Monkey delivers a truly remarkable debut with “Monkey Moments” – one that will hopefully receive wider attention. The duo’s music is excellent at entertaining, but also has enough depth and independence to not get stuck on the interchangeable surface. A promising first musical sign of life.
