ISTANBUL (AP) — Manchester United’s Champions League ambitions were left hanging by a thread following the English team was held to a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Wednesday despite twice leading by two goals in the Istanbul caldera.
United took a 2-0 lead following 18 minutes following two sublime goals from Argentina’s Alejandro Garnacho and Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes. They also went 3-1 up through Scott McTominay’s goal in the 55th minute.
But goalkeeper Andre Onana was the villain of the night, taking the blame for two of the goals scored by Galatasaray, both from free kicks.
After a misstep in Hakim Ziyech’s goal by covering his own post, Onana missed another shot by the Moroccan winger by allowing the ball to slip away to give the hosts a 3-2 lead in the 62nd.
Nine minutes later, Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu capitalized on a good pass from Ziyech and beat Onana to give Galatasaray a draw that kept the Turkish team one point ahead of United, last in Group A.
United will have to defeat Bayern Munich, already qualified, within two weeks to qualify as second in the group.
