A man has taken several hostages at a post office in the Japanese city of Warabi. The city administration said on Tuesday that the perpetrator, who was apparently armed with a rifle, barricaded himself in the building with the people. Shots had previously been fired in the nearby town of Toda, and two people were slightly injured. The background was initially unclear. It was also unclear whether there was a connection between the two incidents.
The daily newspaper “Yomiuri” reported rumors that the hostage taker was carrying kerosene. According to the newspaper, there were around ten postal workers in the building at the time the hostages were taken. The police called on residents to leave the area around the post office.
Television images showed the hostage taker in the post office, apparently carrying a rifle on a strap around his neck. Police with protective shields positioned themselves in front of the building.
