The Brussels Criminal Court on Monday sentenced a young man to a 12-month suspended prison sentence for having threatened, thirty times last February, to kill children in a crèche. The defendant had each time dialed an emergency number. Although his calls were recorded, he denied the facts in court.

The man, who lives on the street, first called the emergency number on February 11, saying he was furious that the police had confiscated his belongings and saying he wanted to kill people. He repeated his call to 112 the next day, making the same threat.

About ten days later, on February 24, the threat escalated: the man called the emergency services 26 times, warning each time that he intended to kill children in a crèche.

All precautions were then taken. Telephone surveys having shown that the calls came from the Havenlaan, all the nurseries in the area were placed under surveillance.

After a few days of calm, the young man called the emergency number once more on February 26 and 27 and renewed his threats. This time, the police were able to locate him with precision and apprehended him on the Havenlaan, in possession of the mobile phone used to make the calls.

According to a psychiatrist, the defendant does not have a mental disorder but he is not harmless, since he has already acted in this way in Germany. “My client continues to deny the facts, despite the recordings and other tangible evidence in the file”the defense said. “So I wonder regarding his mental state.”

The court eventually sentenced the young man to a 12-month suspended prison sentence.
