MAN partner in a program dedicated to the reconditioning of traction batteries

MAN is leader of a nine-partner German research program called REVAMP. This is ambitious since it aims to develop automated industrial processes allowing the reuse of traction batteries, either for a second road application or for stationary reuse (the famous “second life”).

It is, nothing less, than automating the disassembly of the battery, measuring the performance of its cells before their re-assembly. Initiated in February 2023, this program, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), is due to conclude in 2026.

Academic research is also well represented with the University of Aachen (robotics laboratories and the Institute of Electronics and Power Electricity ISEA) or the Fraunhofer IPT institute dedicated to manufacturing.

In its press release, MAN Truck & Bus emphasizes the complexity of the dismantling phase, due to the diversity of the packs and the heterogeneous aging of the cells constituting them. The program also aims to define the testing and preparation methods (reassembly into packs, modules and cells) of the elements thus recovered.

Automation, both for disassembly and for testing and then re-construction of packs, is another important subject. Digital double simulation is also included in the program, for monitoring elements throughout their life and evaluating their use.
