A 30-year-old man was found dead inside the closed engine of a Delta plane at Salt Lake City International Airport following going through an airport emergency exit on New Year’s Eve.

A disturbance was reported around 10 p.m. concerning an unidentified 30-year-old man, local police commented, according to information from the New York Post.

Police at the airport were unable to reach the man in question. He ran through a fire exit and fled onto the airfield, police said.

15 minutes later, the man was found unconscious inside one of the engines of a Delta plane. The engine was not operating at the time of the intrusion, but it was preparing to take off towards San Francisco, with more than 100 passengers inside.

First responders removed the 30-year-old man from the plane, where they pronounced him dead.

The cause of death still remains unknown, since “the engine was not operating at the time,” confirms the airport.

The flight was cancelled. The passengers from this boarding were reassigned to another flight.
