A 73-year-old died at the end of August at the Salzkammergut Klinikum Bad Ischl (Gmunden district), possibly due to a patient mix-up. The man had been given a painkiller that was intended for another sick person.

The staff noticed the error and the 73-year-old was then monitored. During one of these inspections he was found lifeless in bed. The hospital confirmed a report in the “Kronen Zeitung” (Saturday edition) in a press release.

Resuscitation was successful and the man was then taken to the intensive care unit. But he died there following around five days. A statement of the facts regarding the patient mix-up was sent by the clinic to the responsible public prosecutor’s office in Wels. An autopsy was ordered. The cause of death was not yet determined.

According to the newspaper report, the mistake may have happened when a patient was moved to another room. The 73-year-old’s bed had been pushed into its place. It was reported that the transfer may have been overlooked when the medication was distributed.

According to the clinic, the mix-up was discovered immediately and the specialist on duty was contacted. The 73-year-old also seemed to be doing well, and “regular and close monitoring of his health was ordered and carried out.” The man’s values seemed unsuspicious.

“A mistake has been made that we will learn from. There are currently no legal consequences, so we are waiting for the decision from the public prosecutor’s office and the court,” Tilman Königswieser, medical director of the Salzkammergut Clinic, was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
