Canton of Lucerne: Man convicted because he stored kitchen towels incorrectly
The Lucerne public prosecutor’s office has convicted a man because he “improperly” stored his kitchen towels. This led to a fire in his kitchen.

That’s what it’s regarding
-
A man from Lucerne left his kitchen towels on a stove.
-
While he was walking with one of his two dogs, the other dog presumably turned on the rotary switch on the stove.
-
This caused a fire to break out in the man’s apartment.
-
Now the Lucerne public prosecutor’s office has convicted him.
In a somewhat unusual punishment, Andreas W.* from Lucerne was convicted because he was said to have not deposited items properly. Equally remarkable is the backstory that led to this verdict.
The apartment was on fire
Andreas W., who lives in the canton of Lucerne, left his apartment shortly following 7 a.m. on September 16th with one of his two German Shepherd dogs. He left the second dog alone in the apartment. The walk only took half an hour. The 74-year-old returned at 7:30 a.m. to clean up his second four-legged friend. When he locked him in the outdoor kennel at eight o’clock, a nasty surprise awaited him.
The entrance to his apartment was full of smoke. Andreas W. quickly realized that he might not put out the fire that had broken out in his kitchen on his own. He therefore ran into a nearby bakery and asked the saleswoman to call the fire department immediately.
Was it one of the dogs?
The emergency services were on site in a short time and were able to extinguish the fire without any problems. While investigating the cause of the fire, they found a burnt stack of kitchen towels on the stove top. While Andreas W. was walking one of the dogs, the other must have activated the rotary switch on the rear left hob plate. However, the fire department does not rule out the possibility that it might have been Andreas W. himself who consciously or unconsciously turned on the stove.
The Lucerne public prosecutor’s office has now convicted the man of “carelessly placing flammable objects on the hob of the stove”, as can be seen from the penalty order, which was available for 20 minutes. “It was only through the rapid intervention of the police and fire brigade that a fire might be prevented from breaking out,” said the public prosecutor. However, there was no danger to life and limb.
Andreas W. now has to pay a fine of 300 francs for this. He also has to cover the procedural costs. However, the Lucerne resident does not get an entry in the criminal record.
