Guangwei “William” Wuresident of Nashua (New Hampshire, United States), confessed before a federal court be guilty of the crime of interstate transportation of stolen property. He was arraigned on the 1st of June 2023, while his trial was scheduled for the day October 4th.
Wu had a company called Hai Xing Qiao located in the NW city of Manchester. At the end of 2022, another company — a victim of the crime — hired the defendant to transport iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks and other purchased products, worth $2 million not total, for Hong Kong.
Then a third company, Yongfu Huo, bribed Wu with more than US$700 mil so that the products were diverted to her, instead of being delivered normally. To make matters worse, the accused told the victim company that the shipment had been seized by the police. Furthermore, he forged a federal agent’s signature on a false document allegedly issued by the US Postal Inspection Service given to the owner of the products.
According to the crime Wu was charged with, the minimum sentence is ten years in prison, three years in a kind of semi-open regime, a fine of US$250 mil and return of stolen objects. As part of a settlement made with the New Hampshire District Attorney’s Office, he has already paid $2 million to the victim as a form of restitution.
How did you remember the AppleInsider, two businessmen were indicted on similar grounds in March of this year, including interstate (more specifically international) transport of stolen goods, including iPhones. Being such valuable products, it is not surprising that Apple devices are so targeted for this type of activity, demanding extra attention to avoid such incidents.
