An individual violently attacked the police on Saturday evening in front of the Anderlecht police station. Five agents will be incapacitated for at least two weeks, said the Brussels-South police zone, confirming information from the Nieuwsblad.

According to the daily, the facts occurred Saturday evening around 9:45 p.m. when a motorized patrol returned to the police station. Two officers in a combi noticed a man waiting outside the entrance to the police office.

One of the two officers got out of the vehicle to ask the person concerned if he might help him. The man directly inflicted a violent blow on him. According to the Nieuwsblad, the attacker even tried to steal the policeman’s weapon.

The other officer present then called on other colleagues present inside the building. The attacker was finally brought under control by the police, but five of them will nevertheless be unable to work for two weeks following this intervention.

According to the head of corps Jürgen De Landsheer, this is a new case of “indiscriminate violence towards a patrol” of police. Beyond the reason for this aggression, it is also necessary to wonder regarding how to better protect the police in the face of such behavior, insists the officer, who recalls the death, last November, police officer Thomas Monjoie, fatally injured by an imbalance near the Gare du Nord, in Brussels.

The Brussels prosecutor’s office was unable to provide more information on Sunday regarding the Anderlecht attack.
