Man arrested on suspicion of plotting Zelensky’s assassination in collaboration with Russian intelligence

A man who was allegedly in contact with Russian spy services and was helping them prepare an attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been arrested in Poland, Ukrainian and Polish prosecutors said.

He is a Polish citizen, whose first name and initials have only been released: Pavel K. This man was allegedly tasked “to collect and deliver information to the military intelligence service of the Russian Federation (…) , primarily to help Russian intelligence agencies plan a possible assassination attempt on a foreign state leader, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,” the Polish prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Pavel K. declared himself “ready to take action on behalf of the military intelligence service of the Russian Federation and had contacts with citizens of the Russian Federation who are directly involved in the war in Ukraine,” the same text adds.

Warsaw was informed of Pavel K.’s action by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin, the arrested man was tasked with “collecting and transferring to the attacking state information about the security of Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport, in south-eastern Poland, where Zelensky – when he travels abroad – officials often pass through of other countries going to Ukraine and convoys with aid to Ukraine.

Pavel K. has been placed in temporary custody.
