For years, this 64-year-old man from Montaigu-Zichem (Flemish Brabant) has specialized in connecting and reversing electricity, gas and water meters, so that owners pay their much cheaper energy and water. The man charged several hundred euros for his services and would have reversed the counters of no less than 200 addresses. He did this mainly on behalf of catering establishments, but also for private individuals. A cannabis trafficker would also have called on him.

The sexagenarian was spotted by the justice system, which opened a judicial investigation for theft, tampering with seals and money laundering last February. Searches were therefore carried out at fourteen addresses on May 30 and 31 and June 2 in Limburg, Flemish Brabant and Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.

The good life in Tenerife

According to the prosecution, the man used the money to buy horses, jewellery, luxury goods and real estate in Tenerife. At least 90,000 euros in cash, jewelry, horses and a few cars have already been seized during the investigation. In addition, a bank account was blocked in Tenerife and an apartment was seized.

The suspect was arrested some time ago and is currently in jail. His 63-year-old wife and 41-year-old daughter are said to be aware of his actions and are also suspected of money laundering. A 69-year-old family friend is said to have served as the driver. All three were arrested in May before being released.

The Fluvius operator will file a complaint

The network operator Fluvius, active in Flanders, is also cooperating with the judicial investigation because it is required to investigate electricity meter fraud, a company spokesperson confirmed to the two Flemish media. Fluvius also intends to file a complaint once morest the Brabançon.

How did he manage to tamper with these meters all these years without being spotted? Asked regarding this, the Fluvius spokesperson declined to respond as the investigation is still ongoing.
