LONDON – Cambridge Dictionaries has rewritten the traditional definition of Woman and Man as the words become more meaningful over time. A comprehensive and equitable reform has been introduced, including the transgender community.
Transgender is included as a second definition while retaining the old definition of ‘Woman’ as ‘an adult female human being’. The revised definition is an adult who was not born female but lives as a female and identifies as female.
Such an additional definition of the word ‘Man’ is: An adult person who is not born a man but lives as a man and describes himself as a man. Last October, the editors decided to give new meanings to the definitions.
Word of the year: Woman
‘Woman’ has been chosen as the word of the year by online reference site Dictionary.com. From US Supreme Court Justice-designate Ketanji Brown asking Jackson to define the term ‘woman’ during a Senate hearing, to the protests in Iran, various political and social developments this year have considered the importance given to the word and identity of women.
