Mourning in Schattendorf (Mattersburg district) for a 42-year-old man whose death was confirmed by the Eisenstadt public prosecutor on Wednesday. The man was involved in a fight in Schattendorf on Sunday night.
The alleged perpetrator is an 18-year-old Syrian national who lives in the Neunkirchen district. The presumption of innocence applies. An autopsy was ordered by the Eisenstadt public prosecutor’s office.
Suspect not confessed
Further information on the course of events is currently not known and is the subject of investigations. The 18-year-old Syrian was remanded in custody because of the risk of collusion. He was arrested on Tuesday and is being held in Eisenstadt Prison.
The suspect has essentially not confessed to the allegations, a spokeswoman for the Eisenstadt public prosecutor’s office told KURIER.
Witnesses are questioned
As reported, there was an argument in front of a nightclub on Sunday night, several people were involved. A man suffered a broken nose and has already been discharged from the hospital.
The 42-year-old father was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Details of the incident are still unclear.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, a number of witnesses are to be questioned in the coming days.
FPÖ criticizes government
FPÖ General Secretary Michael Schnedlitz took the incident on Tuesday as an opportunity to criticize the federal government’s asylum policy. “How often must there be such incidents before the ÖVP Minister of the Interior (Gerhard Karner, note) finally acts and suspends the right to asylum and takes structural measures to protect the border?” asked Schnedlitz in a broadcast.
