The Supreme Court is involved in the defamation trial between Ousmane Sonko and Mame Mbaye Niang.
Announced several times, the trial between Mame Mbaye Niang and Ousmane Sonko before the Supreme Court never took place. But this time, Les Echos reassures, it is almost certain that the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court should soon take up the case opposing the mayor of Ziguinchor to Minister Mame Mbaye Niang.

“It is almost certain that the file will not take long to be registered. Everything now depends on the general public prosecutor’s office (…) because all the preparations are complete,” the newspaper informs.
The same source recalls that it is up to the general prosecutor’s office to schedule the date of the hearing which should lead to the confirmation or annulment of the decision of the Dakar Court of Appeal condemning Ousmane Sonko, for defamation and insults, to six months suspended sentence and 200 million CFA francs in damages.

The case was raised in the second instance following the appeal from the general prosecutor’s office and the parties following the verdict at first instance. The criminal judge had imposed a two-month suspended sentence on the president of Pastef and 200 million CFA francs to pay to Mame Mbaye Niang.
A definitive conviction of the leader of the Patriots would further reduce his chances of participating in the 2024 presidential election. A contrary decision would allow him to maintain hope.
