In his intervention on national television on August 30, 2023, in the program “The government listens to you”, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene provided an update on the situation of import and distribution of unsuitable medicines to health.
In Guinea, the illegal trafficking, manufacture and sale of pharmaceuticals is deeply rooted and has become a lucrative business, on which many families depend. Upon taking power in September 2021, Mamady Doumbouya’s National Rally Committee for Development (CNRD) made several attempts to curb the trafficking and sale of illicit drugs.
Minister Péthé Diallo qualifies this trade as “a real public health problem in Guinea”. According to him, to date, his department and the judicial authorities have almost succeeded in putting an end to the illegal sale of drugs in Guinea.
“We have almost succeeded in completely shutting down the illegal process of importing and distributing unhealthy drugs. When we received the order from the president, we started by seizing everything that was at the port of Conakry and at the borders. We boarded nearly 242 40-foot containers containing drugs unfit for consumption. We did it with justice, the investigations of the gendarmerie and the national drug control laboratory, in the presence of the owners, we sent to the laboratory. The president’s instructions were to destroy all drugs unfit for consumption,” explains Minister Mamadou Péthé Diallo.
