The Supreme Court has found spy software in five of the 29 phones examined by the expert committee in the Pegasus phone hacking case. However, the court also said that there is no clear evidence that it is Pegasus spyware. Chief Justice NV Ramana added that the committee observed that the central government did not cooperate with the investigation.
The hearing was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice Suryakant and Hima Kohli. The court also said that the extent to which the committee report can be made public needs to be examined in detail. The committee report has been submitted in three parts. It includes two reports by the technical committee and one report by the oversight committee headed by retired judge Justice RV Ravindran.
Last year, the Center was accused of using Pegasus spyware to spy on opposition leaders, activists, judges and journalists. The Supreme Court also mandated an expert committee to investigate whether Israeli spyware was used for targeted surveillance in India.
