The panel of judges at the Corruption Crimes Court (Tipikor) at the Ternate District Court has postponed the trial of the inactive Governor of North Maluku (Malut) Abdul Gani Kasuba due to illness.

KPK spokesperson Tessa Mahardhika Sugiarto explained that the panel saw that Abdul was not in good health while undergoing trial for alleged bribery in the Malut Province. After listening to Abdul’s camp’s statement and seeing medical documents, the judge allowed him to be treated.

“Because the condition of the defendant AGK (Abdul Gani Kasuba) has deteriorated, based on the judge’s decision, the defendant was taken to the Chasan Boesoirie Ternate Regional Hospital, North Maluku to receive medical treatment and observation for 1 x 24 hours,” said Tessa in a written statement, Thursday (11/7).

Tessa might not yet provide details on Abdul’s current medical status.

“The trial was postponed to be continued on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 with the agenda of hearing witness statements from the Public Prosecutor,” said Tessa.

In this trial, Abdul Gani Kasuba was charged with accepting bribes worth Rp5 billion and US$60 thousand along with receiving gratuities worth Rp99.8 billion and US$30 thousand. On the other hand, he was also involved in a money laundering case that is currently still under investigation at the KPK.

“The initial evidence of the alleged TPPU (money laundering crime) is the purchase and disguising the origin of ownership of assets of economic value in the name of another person with an initial value estimated at more than IDR 100 billion,” said KPK spokesperson for prosecution Ali Fikri at the KPK’s Red and White Building, South Jakarta, Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

The Head of the KPK News Division was reluctant to provide further details on the assets believed to have been disguised by Abdul. However, this case is certain to be held based on sufficient evidence.

The KPK has seized a number of Abdul’s assets. A number of witnesses have also provided explanations to investigators regarding this money laundering case. (Z-3)
