Mali welcomes the lifting of “illegal and inhumane” West African sanctions

#Mali : The transitional government in Mali declared itself Monday evening “satisfied” following the lifting on Sunday of “illegal and inhuman” sanctions, decided in January by the West African states following two coups d’etat in this country.

The government, dominated by the military, «notes with satisfaction a convergence of views which has enabled» the lifting of the embargo once morest Mali, in a press release.

Il «thanks the Malian people and salutes their sacrifice and resilience» in the face of «illegal, illegitimate and inhuman sanctions» of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Bamako also rents «solidarity» neighboring Guinea and Mauritania, whose territories and ports, in Conakry and Nouakchott, made it possible to circumvent the West African embargo, bypassing Dakar and Abidjan, where most of the products destined for Mali traditionally transit, landlocked country.

West African leaders lifted on Sunday in Accra the trade and financial sanctions decided in January once morest Mali, in the heart of the Sahel, the scene of two military coups in August 2020 and May 2021.

The colonels in power gave in to the demands of ECOWAS by recently publishing a new electoral law and a calendar providing in particular for a presidential election in February 2024, during a transition limited to two years.

The individual sanctions and the suspension of Mali from the bodies of ECOWAS remain however maintained until the return to constitutional order.

The political crisis in Mali goes hand in hand with a serious security crisis since 2012 and the outbreak of separatist and jihadist insurgencies in the north.
