MaliThe new life of the world’s only nonuplets: ‘It’s a lot of work!’

After spending the first nineteen months of their existence under medical care in Morocco, the planet’s only nonuplets returned home on Tuesday.

The five girls and their four brothers are doing well.

Halima Cissé and her husband, Abdelkader Arby, know they will have their work cut out for them, but they are over the moon. On Tuesday, the couple returned to Mali following spending a year and a half in Morocco, accompanied by a medical team. Without this assistance, Halima and Abdelkader would have had a hard time managing their… nine babies. Indeed, in May 2021, the young woman, now 27 years old, made history by giving birth to the only nonuplets in the world.

The babies, five girls and four boys, were born by caesarean section at 30 weeks of pregnancy, recalls the BBC. Kadidia, Fatouma, Hawa, Adama, Oumou, Mohammed VI, Oumar, Elhadji and Bah weighed between 500 grams and 1 kilo. Before this childbirth recorded in the Guinness Book of Records, the future mother of the nonuplets had flown to Casablanca, where she had been admitted to a specialized center. Given their fragile health, the babies spent the first months of their lives in hospital. They were then able to move in with their parents in a medical apartment.

A few months ago, the happy father confided that each of his children had a very distinct personality. “Some are quiet, while others are louder and cry a lot. Some want to be worn permanently. They are all very different, which is quite normal,” he marveled. Now back in the country, the couple thanked the Malian government, which provided them with financial assistance. Diéminatou Sangara, Minister of Health, has also announced that this support will be extended over time.

Now 19 months old, the nonuplets can now start a normal life in Mali. “It’s a lot of work but Allah, who gave us this blessing, will help us raise them and take care of them,” said the young father.
