Tuesday, December 19, the Minister of Health and Social Development, Colonel Assa Badiallo Touré, launched the fumigation campaign once morest the diseases of dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. The objective of this fumigation campaign is to eradicate the epidemic of dengue, Zika and Chikungunya which is hitting Mali hard.
Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya are diseases transmitted by infected mosquitoes, vectors of arboviruses. Since last September, these epidemics, especially dengue fever, have been rampant in Mali, causing numerous losses of human life. Dengue fever is now included in the ranks of so-called “re-emerging” diseases. In Mali, the epicenter of this epidemic is in Commune VI of the Bamako district.
To deal with this infectious disease caused by the arbovirus virus, the Minister of Health, Colonel Assa Badiallo Touré, in collaboration with the office of the World Health Organization in Mali, proceeded last Tuesday to the site of the displaced people of Faladié in Commune VI of the Bamako district at the launch of the fumigation campaign once morest the diseases of dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. This physical fumigation campaign consisting essentially of spraying and fumigation will initially concern all the neighborhoods of Commune VI of the Bamako district, vector of transmission of these arbovirus diseases.
“We chose Commune VI, because it is the stronghold of this disease in the district of Bamako. But the fumigation and spraying campaign must be carried out not only throughout Bamako, but also throughout the entire territory. We call on the population to observe sanitation measures because we know that these mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and waste that has not been evacuated. We will do our best to spare people, but we will also do our best to destroy mosquitoes”said the Minister of Health.
According to the latter for the moment there is no treatment for dengue, but prevention is the best treatment. From September to the present, the incidence of dengue is progressing very significantly and increasing at the risk of developing severe dengue, known as hemorrhagic.
“As of today, we have more than 700 confirmed cases with around thirty deaths. Health services are doing their best to fight the vector and tests are available at health centers”explained Colonel Assa Badiallo.
Faced with this dengue epidemic, the World Health Organization is very concerned and is taking the lead in eradicating dengue which is caused by an arbovirus.
“The dengue epidemic is of great concern to the WHO. Three months ago, she expressed fear that all continents would be infected by the increase in dengue cases. Two days ago, this global health institution decreed a classification at the highest level of this health crisis. At the African level, there are 10 countries which have reported cases of dengue fever and among which, there are five which are in active epidemic. These are Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Cape Verde”underlined Dr. Itama Christian, the acting representative for the WHO office in Mali.
