Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger signed a military and mutual defense agreement called the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), on Saturday September 16, 2023.

The Alliance of Sahel States was born in a context of crisis. The 3 signatory countries are all in military transition. In Niger, General Abdourahmane Tiany, the assassin of former president Mohamed Bazoum, is under threat of military intervention from ECOWAS.

On July 31, 2023, Captain Ibrahima Traoré of Burkina Faso and Colonel Assimi Goïta of Mali adopted “self-defense measures in support of the armed forces and the people of Niger”.
