More and more men in Belgium are opting for male sterilization, writes De Zondag on Sunday. Last year, 8,898 Belgian men opted for a vasectomy, or nearly 25 per day. In 2021, there were 7,100 and 5,832 in 2020.
“A logical development,” says urologist Piet Hoebeke (UGent). “Family planning has become a shared affair.” Sterilization is a much more complex procedure for women. Maybe it’s up to the man to put in a little effort.”
In a vasectomy, both vas deferens are interrupted so that fertilization can no longer take place. This is a minor operation under local anesthesia. The procedure is mostly popular among men between the ages of 35 and 44. It is remarkable that more and more young people in their thirties are also requesting this operation, with a 50% increase in the number of operations in two years.
