According to the preliminary results of the Election Commission of Maldives, the People’s National Congress (PNC) of Muizo has won more than two-thirds of the votes in the 93-member parliament.
The PNC won 66 of the 86 seats announced, enough for a majority. It could take up to a week for the results to be officially ratified and the new assembly will take over in early May.
According to a report in the local newspaper Maharu, out of a total of 41 women candidates, only three were elected and the winning women belonged to the People’s National Congress (PNC) of Muizu.
The referendum was seen as a key test for Meizu’s plans to push ahead with closer economic cooperation with China. The project also involves construction of thousands of apartments on controversially reclaimed land.
The PNC and its allies had only eight seats in the outgoing parliament.
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which previously held its majority, suffered a humiliating defeat with only 12 seats.
Muizo, 45, was among the first to vote on Sunday, casting his ballot at a school in the capital Mali, where he was previously mayor – and urging Maldivians to turn out in large numbers.
“All citizens should go out and exercise their right to vote as soon as possible,” he said while talking to reporters.
Mueizu won the presidential elections held in September last year.
This month, as the campaign for parliamentary elections was in full swing, Maizu awarded high-profile infrastructure contracts to Chinese state-owned companies.
His administration has already begun the process of sending home 89 Indian soldiers who fly spy planes gifted by New Delhi to patrol the vast maritime borders of the Maldives.
