The Malaysian government has announced that it will abolish the death penalty for certain crimes, and will commute the death penalty for crimes committed while dealing with drugs.
Law Minister Van Junaidi Tuanku Jafar said the cabinet meeting had decided to abolish the death penalty and would look into other alternatives. It was announced in 2018 that the death penalty would be completely abolished, but the decision could not be implemented due to opposition from the families of those killed by political opponents.
