Malaysia Proposed Hosting Mini Commonwealth Games 2026: Mixed Reactions and Financial Support

The Malaysian Olympic Council proposed today (Monday) hosting a “mini” Commonwealth Games in 2026, at a time when the Southeast Asian country is considering hosting the Games in place of the original host, the Australian state of Victoria.

The Commonwealth Games Federation offered Malaysia financial support worth 100 million pounds ($127.33 million) if it decided to host the games following Victoria withdrew last year due to high costs.

The proposal has received mixed reactions in Malaysia amid concerns regarding spending costs and lack of time to prepare. Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the Cabinet was expected to discuss the matter this week.

Victoria’s withdrawal put the future of the multi-game tournament, which is held every four years, in doubt and raised questions regarding the feasibility of holding it and its continued importance.

Malaysia hosted the games in 1998.

Mohd Nazifuddin Najib, Secretary-General of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, today proposed several measures to reduce costs, such as using hotels and regular accommodation to host athletes and officials instead of establishing an Olympic Village for athletes.

He told reporters that Malaysia may redirect some of its budget allocated to the Southeast Asian Games, which it will host in 2027, towards the Commonwealth Games.

He added: “We feel that it will be a mini-tournament.” For example, it does not have to consist of 15 sports, but it can only be 10. We will have two mini opening and closing ceremonies. “We can discuss all this, but it is better for this decision to come from the government.”
