Malaysia Establishes National AI Office to Lead Digital Transformation
Malaysia has launched a dedicated National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Office aimed at propelling the country’s technological advancement. This move comes as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasizes the crucial role of digital innovation in achieving high-income nation status.
The new office, headed by Shamsul Majid, underscores the government’s commitment to harnessing the potential of AI across various sectors.
"We need digital innovation to become a high-income nation," Prime Minister Anwar stated. "This new office will drive policy, regulation, and research in the field, ensuring Malaysia can fully leverage AI for economic growth and societal development."
The involvement of prominent corporations collaborating with the national AI office is seen as a significant endorsement of the initiative. This active participation highlights the commitment from both government and the private sector to establish a thriving AI ecosystem within the country.
Prime Minister Anwar further explained, "The participation of large companies in the AI office reflects our national trade stance, fostering strong partnerships and attracting investment in this crucial sector."
Complementing the establishment of the AI office is a landmark partnership with Microsoft. The tech giant has pledged to train no less than 800,000 Malaysians in AI by 2025. This ambitious initiative aims to equip the Malaysian workforce with the necessary skills to navigate a future increasingly driven by AI.

Malaysia recognizes AI as a catalyst for not only economic growth but also social progress. The government envisions utilizing AI in areas like healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability, improving citizen well-being and quality of life.
