KUALA LUMPUR: Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed Malaysia’s willingness to work with Indonesia in deploying a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force to Palestine, if the UN mandates the operation.

The topic of Malaysia and Indonesia’s participation in the UN peacekeeping force for Palestine was a major point of discussion during a phone call between Anwar and Indonesian president-elect and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto on Monday (1/7), as reported by AlgeriaTuesday (2/7).

Anwar also spoke regarding the potential for Palestinian peacekeeping collaboration to be expanded to the ASEAN region. Previously, Prabowo said Indonesia would be ready to send peacekeeping troops to Gaza, Palestine.

This was revealed when she was a speaker at The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Shangri-La Dialogue 2024, Singapore, Saturday (1/6). Chair of Commission I of the DPR Meutya Hafid supports the efforts of the Minister of Defense (Menhan) Prabowo Subianto to send peacekeeping troops and medical personnel to Gaza, if they receive a mandate from the UN.

“Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives supports the plan to send Indonesian peacekeeping troops to Gaza, Palestine. We have also heard that the Indonesian Ministry of Defense is preparing medical personnel and plans to establish a field hospital in Gaza,” said Meutya.

“This might be a short-term solution for a ceasefire in Gaza as well as a long-term solution for the realization of a ‘two-state solution’ or a fully independent Palestine,” he continued.

The Golkar Faction politician also asked all parties to support this plan. “Indonesia has had enough experience in peacekeeping forces, even since 1957. “We are sure that Indonesian troops are ready. Indonesia is just waiting for the mandate from the United Nations,” he said.

Similarly, Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives Dave Laksono said that for peacekeeping troops, according to him, it is not something new for Indonesia, in fact it is quite routine. Therefore, if the UN assigns it, Indonesia can immediately send peacekeeping troops.

“That’s something that we’ve been sending routinely to a number of countries for decades. So it’s not something new and if the (UN) security council has decided to immediately send peacekeeping troops, we can immediately send them,” Dave explained. (Z-3)
