Making the Train Free for Under 26s: Ambitious Proposal by Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo)

Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) was Martin Buxant’s guest on Bel RTL matin. The Minister of Mobility answered questions regarding an ambitious proposal, that of making the train free for under 26s. How will this work?

“We have done a lot of work on the train since the start of the legislature with investments planned to renew the rolling stock, to strengthen the infrastructure which really needs it. For more attractive options for all audiences, particularly young people , who will benefit from an unconditional large family rate reduction, with reductions during off-peak hours.
But I believe that we must go further and aim for free or almost free up to 26 years of age. Targeted free service for train users. It’s a boost for young people. We have to try to retain the public’s loyalty.”

When might this free service come into effect? “This is a project that we are putting on the table for the next legislature, following on from what we have put in place in terms of rail. We must strengthen the train and aim for better accessibility. It is physical but also price-related . This is one of the elements that we will put on the table.”

As SNCB’s debt amounts to 2.5 billion euros, it is not the company that will finance this free service. How much would the free train cost for under 26s? Who will pay ?

“We have estimated the cost of lost income at 200 million. For us, it is entirely financeable by reducing the advantage for employers on company cars”concludes Georges Gilkinet.
