Majority in the Storting for an abortion limit of 18 weeks

The Center Party opposes several changes to the abortion law, but the party has exempted its representatives. According to NRK, several of them will break the party line.

Among them is Alexander Heen from Hordaland. He confirms that he will vote for both proposals which the Center Party in government has opposed. Minister for Children and Families Kjersti Toppe (Sp) has urged her own party to vote against.

– For me, it is important to get the tribunals removed. The way I assess the practice that has been, where almost everyone has agreed, this is an unnecessary and burdensome rounding buoy. There is also no reason to believe that the number of abortions will increase significantly if we use the experiences of other countries as a basis, he says.

SV cheered the proposal for a new abortion law when it was presented before the weekend.

– This is a historic day to strengthen women’s right to self-determined abortion. I am proud of the fight the Norwegian women’s movement has taken to raise this as an important issue to strengthen women’s human rights, said SV deputy leader Marian Hussein to NTB.

In any case, her party is expected to vote for the new abortion law. There is also Red, Venstre and MDG.

Even if a count from NRK shows a clear majority in favor of the abortion changes, things can still happen until the vote later this autumn. It could be illness, absence or someone changing their point of view – although that now looks unlikely.
