Around 60 people were arrested on Saturday in and around the Gare du Midi in Brussels during a major operation to secure the area, said Sarah Frederickx, spokesperson for the police zone. of Brussels-South. The Minister of the Interior also went there to meet with some agents.

The operation, which began Saturday around 10:00 am, is to continue until the evening. Annelies Verlinden, the Minister of the Interior also went there on Saturday where she met several deployed police officers.

“Such an operation has an immediate effect, but we cannot do it every day,” commented the minister, underlining the “enormous” effort thus made. “After the distress signal launched by the SNCB and the Brussels-Capital Region, we wanted to quickly set up visible actions. A lasting solution is however necessary to solve the problems in the long term”, she added, citing the problems of poverty, housing, addiction, degradation of infrastructure. “These are essential parts of the solution.”

Several mayors were also present on Saturday during the Minister’s visit, such as that of Saint-Gilles or Anderlecht in particular. They took the opportunity to ask Ms. Verlinden for more collaboration and more resources.

“We are busy with additional police recruitments,” said the minister. “In addition, the Brussels-Capital Region already receives additional resources for prevention. I am ready to re-examine everything, but the answer cannot always be more people and more means. In my opinion, it must also be possible to improve collaborations”.
