Major Fire in Nivelles: Updates, Evacuations, and Safety Measures

The major fire which broke out on Monday around 12:30 p.m. on the top floor of a building located on the Grand-Place in Nivelles is under control, local authorities indicated. Around 1:30 p.m., firefighters were still working to put out the flames.

The municipal emergency plan was triggered at 12:38 p.m., the affected building and neighboring homes were evacuated. No casualties were reported.

The police in the Nivelles-Genappe area ask the population to avoid the city center and to obey the orders of the police deployed on the ground.

Students and teachers at the school located near the burning building were asked to stay indoors.

Residents of the Saint-Jacques district, rue de Saintes and the surrounding area of ​​the Grand-place are also invited to stay at home with their doors and windows closed.

TEC bus lines have been diverted from the city center. Security measures will remain in effect throughout the followingnoon and a series of roads in the city center will remain closed to traffic.
