The major fire at a recycling yard in the Hafen district has been extinguished. A hall on the site is badly damaged and partially in danger of collapsing. A structural engineer examined the building on Wednesday followingnoon. In his opinion, the heat has severely affected the statics. Some segments of the flat roof are in danger of collapsing. According to the fire brigade, nobody is allowed to enter this part of the hall anymore. For them, the mission is mostly over.
Firefighters drive by every hour to check and look for embers. The fire broke out in one of the company’s technical systems in the morning. Yellow bags had caught fire. No one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
At times around 100 emergency services on site
Dense black smoke had been rising from the hall for hours. The fire brigade was on site with around 100 emergency services and 25 vehicles. The emergency services were able to contain the fire relatively quickly and prevent the flames from shooting through the roof of the hall.
Because of the smoke development, the fire brigade had warned people in Bremen-Nord, Gröpelingen and Walle regarding odor nuisance and smoke precipitation. Residents were asked to close windows and doors as a precaution and turn off air conditioning and ventilation systems.
