In Steyr, a major fire broke out around 5 p.m. on Saturday evening with heavy smoke developing on the premises of the BMW plant in Steyr. All fire brigades in the city of Steyr were deployed, and the professional fire brigade in Linz was also requested. However, this was no longer used, reported the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten (online edition) in the evening. The approximately 100 firefighters in the city managed to extinguish the fire after around one and a half hours.
The roof of a hall on the factory premises had caught fire. “Bitumen and tar caught fire. That’s why there was such an intense smoke development,” said head of operations Gerhard Praxmarer the OÖN. The liquid bitumen had eaten through the ceiling into the floor below.
The press spokesman for the BMW plant told the Kronen Zeitung (online edition) that there were no injured people. The plant in which electric drives are to be produced in the future is affected, he said.
