A person is missing following a major fire in Sweden’s largest theme park. According to the police and the park administration, a search was underway for a worker at the Lisenberg theme park in Gothenburg. According to the fire department, the fire spread in the area of a new, not yet opened attraction in the park. According to police, 16 people were slightly injured.
Cloud of smoke over the area
The flames burned meters high and a huge cloud of black smoke hung over the district. Last night, the city’s emergency services said they assumed that the extinguishing work would continue. The head of the rescue service told the television station SVT that the fire started in a water slide and had not yet been extinguished.
Police evacuated an adjacent hotel and several offices belonging to the Liseberg theme park in the heart of Gothenburg. Residents were asked to stay in their homes and keep windows and doors closed.
Cause of fire unclear
The cause of the fire is unclear, but investigators said it was an “industrial accident.” According to the theme park management, the fire broke out in the outdoor area of the new Oceana Waterworld attraction and quickly engulfed the entire building. The water park is part of an expansion that was scheduled to open this year. The construction costs were estimated by the TT news agency at around 115 million euros.
