Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — The World Health Organization said there is a “significant biological risk” following one of the warring parties occupied the central public health laboratory in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
“It is very dangerous because we have polio (samples) in the lab, we have measles (samples) in the lab, we have cholera (samples) in the lab,” Nima Saeed Abid, WHO representative in Sudan, said Tuesday.
“There are significant biological risks associated with the occupation of the Central Public Health Laboratory in Khartoum by one of the warring parties,” Abed added.
A high-ranking medical source told CNN on Tuesday that the Rapid Support Forces had captured the National Public Health Laboratory in Khartoum. “The laboratory was taken over by the Rapid Support Forces,” the source said, adding that the laboratory “has a large number of epidemics.”
The danger lies in the outbreak of any armed confrontation in the laboratory, because this “will turn the laboratory into a germ bomb.”
“Urgent and rapid international intervention is required to restore electricity and secure the laboratory from any armed confrontation, because we are facing a real biological threat,” the source said.
CNN has reached out to the RSF for comment.
