PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Maine government will cover funeral expenses for family members who lost loved ones in the deadliest massacre in state history, Gov. Janet’s office said. Mills on Wednesday.

An Army reservist opened fire inside a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston, Maine’s second-largest city, on October 25. The shooting left 18 dead and 13 injured, and paralyzed the city until the suspect’s body was found two days later. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The funerals for the victims of the massacre began at the end of last week. The administration is “working to ensure that victims’ families do not have to bear any financial costs related to their loved ones’ funerals,” said Ben Goodman, a spokesman for the governor.

The state will get the money from a victim compensation program run by the state attorney’s office, and will supplement it with resources from the governor’s emergency fund, Goodman said.

The shootings shook the state, which is known for its high level of gun ownership and low rates of violent crime. Among the victims were a shipbuilder, a sign language interpreter, a 14-year-old bowler and his father. The state’s deaf community was particularly hard hit by the shooting and lost four members.

The Lewiston community is still mourning two weeks following the shooting. Banners with legends such as “Pray for Lewiston” and “Lewiston, be strong” are common in Portland, the state’s largest city — located regarding 35 miles (56 kilometers) away. Additionally, Lewiston hosted President Joe Biden last week.

Three of the injured people remained in stable condition Tuesday at Central Maine Medical Center, hospital representatives said.

Democrat Mills also announced this week that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) approved a request for financial support for Maine businesses affected by the shootings. Businesses in Lewiston and the neighboring communities of Lisbon and Bowdoin closed in compliance with authorities’ orders while the search for the shooter was underway.
