Beginnings
“Al-Meligy” was born in the Maghribin neighborhood in the center of the Egyptian capital, Cairo in 1910, and joined the secondary stage at the Khedive School, when he learned regarding the existence of a person named Labib Al-Kroaty, who encourages students to a hobby of acting
The circumstances wanted the great artist Fatima Rushdi to see him during her follow-up to a theatrical performance organized by the school troupe, and she admired his artistic performance and offered him to work in her troupe for 4 pounds per month. After participating in a number of theatrical performances, El-Meligy moved to the cinema screen and was fortunate enough to stand in front of the East Planet Umm Kulthum in the movie “Wedad”, produced in 1936.
Mahmoud El Meligy’s work
The artist Mahmoud El-Meligy and his friend Farid Shawqi formed a successful duo. In most films, Shawky played the role of the good and El-Meligy as the villain. One of the most important works that brought them together on the cinema screen is “Al-Fatwa, Pavement Namra 5, Shayat Al-Ans”.
Despite the large number of works that Mahmoud El-Meligy participated in in his youth, he did not advance to the first box of the boy, and production companies did not bet on him at that time, despite the size of his talent.
And luck smiled on the artist Mahmoud El-Meligy in the last days of his life, when the international director Youssef Chahine got excited regarding him, as he bet on him in 1970 in the movie “The Land” and presented the character of the farmer Muhammad Abu Swailem very brilliantly, and worked with Shaheen in the films “The Choice, the Bird, and The Return of the Prodigal Son” .
Critics gave El-Meligy many titles, most notably Anthony Quinn Al-Sharq.
The personal life of the artist Mahmoud El-Meligy
After a wonderful love story, El-Meligy married the artist Alawia Jamil at the beginning of his artistic career, and he was keen to win her love and satisfaction permanently, and he increased his love for her that she bore him despite his inability to have children.
But it is impossible to get bored of his life with Alawia Jamil, so he got to know the artist, Lola Sidqi, and thought regarding marrying her, but Alawia forced him to end this relationship quickly because of her strong personality.
Al-Meligy rebelled once morest the siege of Alawiya Jamil in the seventies and secretly married the artist Sana Younis and lived with her for a long time, and following his departure in 1983, Sana Younis revealed the secret and said that she was very loyal to him.
Egyptian critic Tariq El-Shennawy confirmed the news of El-Meligy’s marriage and Sana Younes, and said in a television interview: “Sana Younes was engaged in an unannounced marriage to Mahmoud El-Meligy, during the period of his marriage to Alawiya Jamil.”
Al-Shennawi explained that following Al-Meligy’s departure, Sana Younes contacted him and asked him not to reveal the news, so as not to anger Al-Meligy’s heirs.
