Mahinda Rajapaksa resigns: Silent China | China stays mum on the resignation of Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa

BEIJING: China has not reacted to the tainted political developments in Sri Lanka. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhao Lijiang has called on members of the ruling party and the opposition to work together to tackle the crisis in Sri Lanka. Developments in Sri Lanka are being monitored.

He said he hoped the ruling and opposition parties would take the initiative to resolve the crisis in the interest of their own country. Mahinda Rajapaksa has always been loyal to China. He is the leader who allowed Chinese investment in the country. Rajapaksa did not take India’s concerns into account. Negotiations to lease Hambantota, the country’s main port, to China began during Mahinda’s tenure.

Sri Lankan President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has held talks with the ruling opposition and the main opposition to find a solution to the crisis.
