FORMER Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad wants peacekeeping troops to be sent to Gaza immediately to protect the Palestinian people.

He conveyed the request in a short message read by the Head of the Perdana World Peace Foundation (PGPF) Tan Sri Norian Mai at the opening of the Malaysian NGO-NGO Coalition Colloquium: Free Palestine in Putrajaya, Monday (22/7).

“The international community must act! Send peacekeeping forces to Gaza to protect the Palestinian people and stop the genocide in the name of humanity, the sanctity of human life,” Mahathir said.

Mahathir, who is the founder and president of PGPF, warned that the world had witnessed the situation in Palestine and the genocide carried out by Israel, which he called Zionist and had become a monster because it did not respect human values.

Israel is openly committing genocide against the Palestinian people, he said, stressing that he conveyed two of his hopes at the colloquium on Palestine.

First, the meeting demanded and pressured the international community to take responsibility for the ongoing genocide and stop it.

Second, demand and pressure the government to condemn and denounce the genocide and domestically support boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Israel and companies and entities that support Israel.

He said the international community must hold Israel accountable, stressing that Israel must be punished for the crimes and barbarity committed by its government.

The former Malaysian PM was supposed to deliver a keynote address at the opening of the colloquium, but was unable to attend as he has been undergoing treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur for the past week. (Ant/Z-2)
